High Cholesterol and Gemfibrozil |
The people who have low HDL and greater level of triglycerides, they should be guided for gemfibrozil or fenofibrate. The people who have coronary artery disease, they can take gemfibrozil to avoid heart attack. It can increase HDL from 10% to 35% and lower triglycerides from 25% to 50%. The side effects of gemfibrozil are vomiting, upset stomach or nausea. And also abdominal pain, gallstones and it can communicate with drugs which cause bleeding. Fenofibrate provide side effects such as stomach upset, rash, gallstones, inflammation of liver and muscle. Fibric acid derivatives can increase LDL level. So it is not helpful for people who have coronary artery disease in which LDL level is high. If you are taking statins, you have to very careful for taking fibric acid derivatives as there will be a possibility of developing rhabdomyolysis which is a muscle problem. And it can inactive kidney’s function. Gemfibrozil is safer than fenofibrate. Diabetes patients should not use fenofibrate instead of statins. You can take gemfibrozil twice a day: 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner. |
