Basically, there are two types of cholesterol present in your body, good and bad. Good cholesterol is known as HDL cholesterol and the bad is LDL cholesterol.
The healthy or recommended level of cholesterol differs from one person to the other depending on their age, sex, medical history. Basically, men and women have different situations in their internal system depending on their hormones. In general, women have got higher quantity of good or HDL cholesterol and lower amount of bad or LDL. This situation is only before menopause. In reality, estrogen, a female sex hormone which plays a vital role in increasing the level of good cholesterol in women’s body. And after menopause, the production of estrogen hormones reduce in the body as a result; the body of women is at increased risk of heart diseases.
Men and women are usually recommended to have different HDL cholesterol level in their body. A normal man has the good or HDL cholesterol less than 40 mg/dL and in the case women, they have it less than 50 mg/dL. Preferably, both the men and women should have the cholesterol level above 60 mg/dL. So, it is very important to maintain the recommended levels of cholesterol to avoid various health complications. |
